The Weston U15 Blue team finished the highest ever for a Weston Lacrosse Club team in the CONNY tournament. Weston ends the season as the 5th ranked youth team in the State of Connecticut by virtue of winning the second division title. This is a wonderful accomplishment given the size of our community relative to others in the state. It is a tribute to the dedication and effort of all those players, parents, coaches and administrators involved. Our goal in youth lacrosse is to teach and support the game of lacrosse in an environment of safety, respect and Fun! We strive for excellence on the field at all times and expect a high standard of commitment to the game of lacrosse. Winning is the natural culmination from doing many of the little things right on and off the field.
Congratulations to Head Coach Jim Smith and all the players and assistant coaches for an outstanding season of youth lacrosse. Jim has coached in Weston lacrosse for 10 years and was instrumental in developing the players in the 2009 WHS senior class when they were 5-6 graders. These young men played with heart until the bitter end in a 12-11 loss in the CT CLass S State Title Game yesterday. It was a big day for Jim and many of the parents who had boys playing in both the youth and high school championships yesterday.

Now that the Weston High School boys lacrosse team will play in the Connecticut state title game in Norwalk tomorrow, it seems like a good time to reflect upon the team's success. Regardless of the outcome of the state title game, we should be really proud of Weston Lacrosse. In particular, we should be proud of the players. Three straight seasons in the State Championship game is a credit to these lacrosse players especially as the quality of the sport in Connecticut continues to improve.
The senior class on this team is a special group of 11 kids They have grown up together playing a variety of sports from youth soccer, to little league to youth football and basketball. They have shared the classroom since kindergarten which is one of the unique benefits of living in a small town. They had play dates together when they were still eating with their first set of teeth and they have slept on each other's bedroom floors for years. More than teammates, they are friends. The fires of competitive high school lacrosse has strengthened the friendship bond. The underclassmen on the team are equally tight-knit. The beauty of this team is that it has so many diverse personalities that come together to pursue one mission -- excellence on the lacrosse field.
Several senior members of the team were original members of the first Weston lacrosse bantam team in 1999. They are Sean Ledwick, Josh Briskman, Mikey Scheufele and Ben Miller. Others who joined the program in its second year like Peter Smith, Alex Scher, Jonathan Figliola, and Ben O'Brien. Sam Crowell moved to Weston in 7th grade and started playing lax then. Tom McNally picked it up as a freshman in high school. And Stephen Mok picked it up his senior year. This last entry speaks well of the program and its players as Stephen was encouraged to "give it a shot" by his classmates and was supported all along the way by them. Overall, nearly 60 classmates of this senior class played lacrosse at one point in their lives, attracted to the teaching model of ample play. Although only 11 remain playing in Weston, several others have moved out of town and play at their current high school. Still others play other sports like tennis and golf in Weston, or have decided to concentrate on other sports on a more year-around basis. These former teammates in youth lacrosse have become some of the team's best fans. Most have fond memories of their experiences in youth lacrosse.
The Weston team's accomplishments are remarkable in the context of the size of our high school and the newness of the program. We have only been playing high school lacrosse in Weston for 7 years and we have the smallest boys enrollment of any of the top 20 teams in the state when combining Class L, M and S teams. When the youth program started, we thought that we could overcome the school enrollment deficiency by creating a youth program model that would attract a disproportionate amount of kids to the game. And, as anyone who has seen lacrosse knows, the excitement and action of the game is very attractive to today's youth culture.
We thought our biggest challenge would be that most dads in town did not play lacrosse when they were kids and hence had no desire to teach lacrosse to their kids. This was different than in local towns such as Darien, Wilton, New Canaan and Greenwich where many parents considered the quality of the town's lacrosse program as a factor in the decision to move to that town. While most Weston parents were not inclined to play lacrosse catch with the kids in the backyard on a Sunday afternoon, Wilton parents were fanatical about it.
The loss of "passing it forward" to the next generation was partly overcome by teaching sound fundamentals at an early age. We tried to instill the values of hard work and developing skills both lefty and righty. If you watch any starter on this WHS team, you would not see any drop in skill level when they go lefty or righty. Even the defensemen and goalie are fully proficient. They may favor one hand over the other, but they are equally capable. You can bet that a lot of backyard skill development has happened with this group of kids. However, it is still pretty easy to pick out the kids who play a lot of wall ball and catch in the backyard during the off season. There is absolutely no substitute for this backyard work.
We have recently tried to bridge the generation gap by establishing the Weston Champs Camp. This has been a great success and allows our young players to learn from past Weston players who were highly successful at the high school level and now play at the college level. Just another rung in the ladder. We are in our third year of Family Night when we invite all Weston families to a night lacrosse game with free admission. We gave away team photos and held an autograph session at the end of the game. All kids (high school and youth) loved it! We now see youth players at most home games and a few seek autographs from their favorite players. We hope that this will continue to create a bond between the generations that leads the younger kids to want to emulate the older ones. And this group of high school players is worth emulating. They are great kids who are good role models on and off the field.
As the Weston program specifically and the game of lacrosse generally advances, better players are spending much more time perfecting stick skills. Today's youth players will be challenged at a much high skill level than even today's high school team. Kids will not be able to get by on athleticism alone. This is not a call to concentrate specifically on lacrosse. Coaches at all levels of the game (College D1, D2 and D3, high school and youth) strongly urge kids to play multiple sports. Competing on a playing field in any sport during the summer, fall and winter will make you a better lacrosse player. Of the 27 Weston varsity lacrosse players, all but 5 play another sport. All of them played at least two sports during the youth phase of their lives. Rather, it is a call to encourage young players to play catch and wall ball consistently and methodically throughout the course of the year. By methodically, we mean "to play catch with a purpose." Practice to perfect proper throwing, catching, scooping, cradling and shooting technique both lefty and righty. Don't just play catch and ingrain bad form. Work to improve your form. Don't just stand still in front of the goal and take 20 righty shots for the middle of the goal from 15 yards out. Shoot 50 times lefty and righty. Shoot on the run. Shoot for all spots along the uprights and crossbar. Be methodical. Shoot 10 lower left, 10 hip-high left, 10 upper left, 10 under the crossbar, 10 upper right, etc. until you go all the way around the cage. Then do it again...and again...and again.
We hope that parent and youth players make it to the championship game at Brien McMahon HS in Norwalk on June 13 at 10:30 a.m. By doing so, you will help to honor the game of lacrosse and those who play it with passion and the pursuit of excellence. And you will be doing a great service to your young aspiring lacrosse child. You would be surprised by the impact watching your high school team in a state title game can have on kids. It makes them dream. And chasing dreams is one of life's great pleasures.

The Weston High School boys lacrosse team has been in existence for only 7 years. Remarkably, it is returning to the Connecticut State Class S Championship Game for the 3rd consecutive season. Weston plays St. Joseph's High School (Trumbull) at 10:30 a.m. at Brien-McMahon High School in Norwalk on Saturday, June 13.
Brien-McMahon is the host site for all State of Connecticut Lacrosse Championship Games in 2009. Other games that day at Darien vs Wilton in the Class M title game, and Fairfield Prep vs Simbury in the Class L title game. Weston defeated Simbury, 7-6, in its season opener this year. After defeating Ledyard, 15-9, on Thursday, June 11, Weston earned another shot at the crown.
Three early goals by Brian Rogers and 1 by Peter Smith propelled Weston to a 4-2 first quarter lead. Weston exploded in the second quarter to take the lead into the half, 12-3. Ledyard, down by 9, stunningly went into a zone defense and did not pressure Weston's offense at all, allowing the Trojans to kill several minutes off the clock at each clip. Weston held a comfortable lead thereafter as the game wound down. Other scorers for Weston were Morgan Faller with 4 goals, Peter Smith with 2 goals, Sean Ledwick with 3 goals, Rob Cordisco with 2 goals and Alex Scher with a tally. Josh Briskman made several good saves and Rob Cordisco dominated the faceoffs. Many other players played well for Weston.

The Weston HS Boys Lacrosse team defeated #1-seeded Granby, 12-4, on June 9 to advance to the State Class S semi-final game. Weston plays Ledyard HS (14-5 record) at West Haven High School on Thursday, June 11 at 7 p.m.
Weston goals were scored by Morgan Faller, Rob Cordisco, Brian Rogers, Peter Smith and Sean Ledwick. Josh Briskman played well in the goal for Weston.
Weston's defensive unit of Mikey Scheufele, Willie Miller, Kip McMahon, along with LSM Tucker Drimal and SSM's Alex Peyreigne and Jon Figliola, allowed 3 mandown goals and one transition goal. Otherwise, the unit completely shut down the Granby attack.
It would be fantastic if Weston youth players could attend the next game at West Haven. Watching the high school team succeed at the state level is great motivation for the younger players. Please try to attend the game.
Weston's record is 12-8 this season.

Dear Weston Lacrosse Coaches, Parents, Players and Fans:
Here is a message that all youth programs in CT received from the President of the Connecticut-New York Youth Lacrosse Association (CONNY). The Weston Lacrosse Club Board of Directors wholeheartedly supports CONNY and its message to coaches. Our coaches are responsible for fan behavior. You, as parents, represent not only yourself and your children, but the Weston Lacrosse organization when attending youth games. Our coaches will get kicked out of games if our parents are harassing officials, players and coaches. And you or your child may be removed from the field or the game if you are cited for not following the Code of Conduct.
It has come to our attention that parents are sitting behind the team when watching youth games. Parents and fans violate CONNY rules when standing on the same side of the field as the team bench area. We do not want parents "coaching" their kids while on the field or lobbying for playing time for their kids during the game. This is not acceptable behavior. Parents should always go to the opposite side of the field as the bench area, unless there are mitigating circumstances.
If you are losing your cool, please stop and take 10 deep breaths and repeat, "its only a youth game." If you see a fellow Weston fan losing it, then please ask them them to "take 10 breaths." -- intervention device offered by the Positive Coaching Alliance.
Over our 11 years, the Weston Lacrosse Club has enjoyed a reputation as a model program in Connecticut and across the nation. Our club leaders helped to establish the "CONNY Sportsmanship Committee" referred to in the message below. However, last year the club was called in front of that same committee when one of our teams was cited for misconduct by officials at the CONNY tournament last year based on the sideline behavior of parents. Yelling at the ref or disparaging the opponents, is not acceptable. Our reputation matters and we (coaches, parents, players, fans) are part of creating and upholding that reputation.
Please read the notice below.
Thank you.
To ALL CONNY PROGRAMS and COACHES,
The season is wrapping up quickly, but over the last several weeks, across a whole spectrum of our member programs, we have had a rash of bad behavior from parents and coaches. To our kids’ credit they have been great and we all want to keep it that way! So I thought I’d better reinforce and clarify CONNY’s expectations for Parental and Coaching behavior.
Most of you have attended a Positive Coaching Alliance class and understand what we expect. Let me set the record straight, the CONNY 2009 Boys Rules of Play mandate “ZERO TOLERANCE” enforcement of NFHS Rule 5-9, Unsportsmanlike Conduct, and go on toughen penalties and clarify that “Head coaches are responsible for the conduct of their players, coaching staffs and other sideline personnel, and supporting spectators.” If you haven’t recently done so, read the rule and CONNY’s modifications to it; they are completely crystal clear. From the start of the season, we have encouraged officials to enforce the spirit and letter of this policy. It is never acceptable for coaches, let alone spectators, to attempt to debate calls with officials. If you have a serious issue with an opposing coach or official, document your complaint and send it to me after the game. I’ll make sure the CONNY Sportsmanship Committee, and in the case of officials, the appropriate assigning authority, investigates.
It’s time to live the CONNY Code of Conduct each of us has signed. Let’s remember that lax is just a game, and keep it in perspective. Our kids learn life lessons by watching how we handle situations, so let’s set an example we’ll be proud to have them emulate.
We are all looking forward to a successful end to the season and need to be on our best behavior. Please be extra diligent asking your coaches and parents to “do the right thing.” If they won’t or can’t, CONNY will unhesitatingly ban offenders from attending any remaining games, including CONNY Tournaments games.
Thanks for your continued support of CONNY and all the kids involved.
Best,
Bob Russell
CONNY PRESIDENT

The Weston High School boys lacrosse team was knocked out of the Southwest Conference tournament in the semi-final round by the favored tournament team, New Fairfield, in a high-scoring 15-13 game at Bunnell HS (Stratford) on Friday, May 29. However, in defeat, the team may have built a foundation from which to launch at run at the State Class S Title. The was the second straight solid game for Weston and the Trojans are building momentum.
Weston fell behind 3-0 early, but battled back to 3-3 on goals by Morgan Faller, Alex Peyreigne and Alex Scher. The ever-explosive New Fairfield Rebels triggered a 5-goal response and went into halftime up 9-4. Weston fell behind 13-5 until Rob Cordisco scored with 1 second to go in the 3rd quarter; and, opening the 4th quarter, Cordisco won the faceoff, passed it to Sean Ledwick at the point who transferred it to Faller on the lower right post who stuck it in the goal. Weston scored 2 goals in 7 seconds to narrow the gap, 13-7.
Weston manned up on defense and thwarted New Fairfield time and again while the offense, led by Faller's 6 goals and relentless effort, exploded for another 5 goals to NF's one, closing the score to 14-12 with 4 minutes remaining. NF got one back until Faller netted his final goal of the game, making it 15-13. Weston took the ball away from NF as the clock ran down but could not score again.
Weston's Morgan Faller scored 6 goals and was dominating in the Weston comeback rally. Sean Ledwick and Alex Scher notched two goals each. Lone other scorers were Brian Rogers, Alex Peyreigne and Rob Cordisco.
Stellar defensive efforts came from Kip McMahon who stripped the ball several times and led clearing to the offensive end. Willie Miller clamped down on one of the best crease men in the league. All other defensive players played tight. New Fairfield simply has a relentless offense that will take it far in the Class M state tournament.
Weston waits one week to commence the state tournament on Saturday, June 6.

We understand the impact of the current economic environment on family finances. Through the help of the Weston Lacrosse Club - Paul Scheufele Endowment Fund, we have provided financial aid to several Weston families so that their children could fully participate in lacrosse this year. The WLC is committed to keeping access for all kids to our youth lacrosse programs. That is why we cut our program fees extensively this season. In addition, we are reaching outside of our community to provide financial assistance for inner city kids from Bridgeport to attend the Weston Champs Camp on June 23-25. All of this is made easier by the Endowment!
The Endowment started thanks to the vision and generosity of one Weston Lacrosse family that wanted to give back to the program for what it did for their son. The Endowment thrives thanks to the 173 contributors who have supported the Endowment with donations since its inception in 2006. In 2009, we hope to match last year's participation goal of 100 contributors.
Every contribution to the Endowment is cherished and honored, whether is be $25 or $25,000.
If you have any questions regarding the Endowment, please contact Jack Zimmermann at

If the Weston Lacrosse program has also had a positive impact on your family, could you please make a donation by June 30, 2009? As little as $25 keeps our program of safety, respect and FUN going strong for future generations of lacrosse players. Please make your tax deductible donation payable to:

Weston defeats Barlow,5-4, to advance in SWCs on May 27
The WHS Boys Lacrosse team defeated Barlow (Redding), 5-4, in a defensive thriller at Barlow May 27. Weston advances to the semi-final round of the Southwest Conference Championship on Friday, May 29 at Bunnell HS in Stratford at 7pm when the will take on the top seed New Fairfield Rebels ( currently ranked 4th in the state and riding a 40-game winning streak).
In victory, Weston accomplished something only done in less than 2% of the games played in CT this season by winning a game when scoring 5 goals or less. Outstanding play by the defensive unit led the way for Weston. Josh Briskman was outstanding in the goal and the defensive unit of Mike Scheufele, Tucker Drimal, Willie Miller and Kip McMahon, along with defensive middies Jonathan Figliola, Charlie Smith, Alex Peyreigne and Tom McNally, held Barlow to 1 goal in the final three quarters of play.
After playing 10 of the first 12 minutes of the game on defense, Weston fell behind, 3-0. Sean Ledwick cracked Barlow's outstanding goalie in the second quarter to score Weston's first goal. Goals by the Trojan's other attackmen, Morgan Faller and Alex Scher tied the score at 3-3 in the third quarter, but a Barlow fastbreak goal earned them the lead, 4-3, entering the final quarter. Morgan Faller netted his 2nd goal to tie the game, 4-4, with 5 minutes remaining.
Peter Smith appeared to scored the game-leading goal by sweeping hard right and bouncing it into the goal. But a Weston player stepped on the goal crease before the ball entered the cage and the goal was waived off. A few minutes later Scher earned his second perfect assist hitting Faller with a pass as he popped off the crease and Faller scored the game winner. It was Faller's 3rd goal of the game.
Weston's once again tested its mandown defense following the next faceoff. But the unit held strong. After a save by Briskman, Scheufele cleared the ball to McMahon who moved it to Scher in the offensive end. Following a timeout, Robbie Cordisco and Faller iced the ball in the offensive zone to protect the victory.

The Weston Boys Lacrosse team dropped its 4th straight game game last night with a 9-7 loss at conference rival Joel Barlow last night as its record falls to 8-7 on the season. A win at Bethel on Wednesday, May 20, on Senior Night at 6 p.m. may give Weston some positive momentum entering the post-season conference tournament and State playoffs. Youth players are encouraged to attend this final regular season game and most likely the last home game of the season.
According to Laxpower.com, Weston is ranked 22 in the state (of 78 teams) and is the 3rd ranked Class S team based on its strength of schedule. All of Weston's losses have come against higher ranked opponents. In its 4 game losing stretch, Weston dropped games to New Fairfield (4th ranked in the State), Barlow (12th ranked), Brien McMahon (19th ranked) and Staples (20th ranked). The Trojans other losses were at the hands of Newtown (10th ranked), New Milford (13th ranked) and Guilford (14th ranked). Four of these games were lost by 2 goals or less. Weston's one win against higher ranked opponents was in its opening game of the season in an overtime win over Simsbury (9th ranked).
Weston entered the 4-game stretch with an 8-3 record. They opened the stretch with a loss to Brien-McMahon HS (Norwalk), 12-7 and followed with a loss to Staples (Westport), 9-8, a team that Weston was projected to defeat. The Trojans next travelled to New Fairfield HS who was riding a 36-game winning streak dating back to the last time Weston defeated them in the State Class S semi-finals in 2007. Weston held close through the first half then the wheels fell off and New Fairfield took a 17-7 lead into the early minutes of the 4th quarter. New Fairfield pulled its starting team and Weston climbed back to the final score of 17-11.
Last night, against Joel Barlow HS (Redding), Weston lost another close game, 9-7. To its credit, the team moved the ball well on offense and challenged Barlow on defense. Down by 4 goals in the 3rd quarter, 8-4, Weston had multiple extra man opportunities allowed Weston to climb within one goal until Barlow scored with 3 minutes remaining. Weston never relented at the end and good goalkeeping by Barlow was too much for the Trojans valiant effort.
Weston will likely get the 5th seed in the Southwest Conference tournament and draw a rematch with Barlow at Barlow on May 27. A win versus Barlow means Weston will likely face New Fairfield in a rematch at the semi-finals at Bunnell HS (Stratford) on May 29. The SWC finals will be played at Pomperaug HS (Southbury) on June 2.
Regarding the state tournament, any team in CT with a .400 winning percentage with at least a 10 game schedule against Varsity opponents qualifies for the tournament. A win against Bethel leaves Weston at 9-7 with a winning percentage of .5625. Based on results through May 18, Weston's likely seeding is the 9th to 14th spot which means it will play the entire tournament at away or neutral sites.
Weston has an excellent shot at going deep into the final rounds of the Class S tournament. Only Barlow and St. Joseph's (Trumbull) are ranked higher than Weston when teams are compared on a relative strength of schedule (laxpower.com). Weston is looking to make it to the finals of the State Class S tournament for the 3rd consecutive season.

Both the Weston High School Varsity and JV teams lost to Brien-McMahon of Norwalk on Monday, May 11. The varsity team lost 12-7 and the JV team lost 4-3.
In Varsity action, Weston fell behind 8-4 at the half and gave up some early goals in the 3rd quarter. Weston, trailing by six most of the second half, sat in a zone defense as BM worked down the clock. Weston did not have many chances to get the ball on offense, and when it did, errant passing derailed the effort. Weston's seasonal record drops to 8-4. Weston travels to Staples of Westport to play Thursday, May 14.
Weston goals were scored by Sean Ledwick (4g), Rob Cordisco (1g), Alex Scher (1g) and Tucker Drimal (1g).
Weston's record is 1-4 against teams ranked in the top 20 in the state, allowing 11 goals per game against stronger opponents (Simsbury-6, Guilford-11, Newtown-11, New Milford-15 and McMahon-12). Weston has scored just 8.6 goals per game against ranked opponents. Weston's record is 7-0 against teams that are ranked lower than 25th in the state. Weston has outscored these lower ranked opponents 99-12, pumping up Weston's overall season statistics. Overall, the Trojans have scored 11.8 goals per game while allowing 5.6 goals against per game this season.
The next 3 games will all be challenging for Weston as they face Staples (24th in the state), New Fairfield (4th in the state) and Barlow of Redding (16th in the state).
--------------------------------
In JV action, BM had probably the most disciplined and quickest defenses of any team thus far. They slid to the ball well, had overall good stick work, and limited our opportunities throughout the first half. As a result BM took a 3-1 lead into halftime. A few minutes into the start of the second half they scored another insurance goal on a smart play in transition to go up 4-1. It didn't look great at that point, but Weston D locked in after that and didn't allow many other shots. Offense failed to take advantage of a man-down opportunity to start the 4th, but a few minutes later Jack Steinharter put a good shot on net that the BM goalie originally handled but then knocked in after failing to locate the rebound. This brought it to 4-2. Joey Falci scored on a strong move from X to make it 4-3 with about 3 minutes remaining. The final minutes ticked down with a few opportunities for both teams, but nothing materialized.
