The Defending State Champion Weston Boys Lacrosse team took on the undefeated and # 2 ranked in the state New Fairfield Rebels this past Saturday on a steamy night in front of a standing room only crowd at Brien McMahon HS in Norwalk.
The Trojans trailed 1-0 early but quickly responded as Senior Co-captain Jeff Ledwick rushed down the left side and buried a high hard shot passed the NF goalie. Minutes later, an alert Alex Scher found Sean Ledwick wide open on the pipe as he buried a left bounce shot to put the Trojans up 2-1. Weston continued its run as Robbie Cordisco made a skip pass to senior Nick Figliola who found the back of the net to put the Trojans up by a score of 3-1. The Rebels quickly called a time-out to settle the game and was able to shift the momentum by scoring 3 goals in the final 3 minutes of the first quarter to put them up 4-3. Opening the second stanza, the Rebels controlled the face-off and raced to a fast break goal and then scored two more until Cordisco found the net off a pretty pass from Sean Ledwick to close the gap to 7-4. NF again controlled the face-off and scored once more before the half, which found the Trojans down 8-4. Josh Briskman who finished the game with an amazing 22 saves was stellar once again keeping Weston in the game with at least six point blank stops on a talented Rebel attack unit. Additionally, Coach Carney designed a defensive scheme that locked down the conference’s highest goal scorer and highest assist man as yeoman’s work was being done by sophomore Tucker Drimal and senior Robbie Glascott. Midfielder Senior Co-Captain Dylan Hannum did a great job clearing the ball against the Rebel ride helping Weston control tempo for much of the first half. Sam Crowell, Kip McMahon, Jon Figliola and Willie Miller were all key on the defensive side of the ball as well.
In the second half, the Rebels had too much for the Trojans as they reeled off 3 more goals to move to a 11 -5 lead until Cordisco scored his second goal of the night with a shifty move from behind the goal. The Rebels high octane fast break style continued to pressure the Weston defense as they went on another 3 goal run. In the fourth quarter Weston showed the heart of a champion unwilling to give up their title without a fight as they continued to play hard. Jeff Ledwick scored Weston’s final two goals of the game as he dodged from up top and rifled a high bounce shot and then minutes later drove from X and dumped the his last goal over the defender and goalie.
We say goodbye, thank you and good luck to the six seniors who, along with first year head coach Brendan Carney, led this team to the second most wins in the school’s history with a 14-8 record, the first SWC tournament win and its second straight appearance in the title game. All these seniors are home grown products of the Weston Youth Lacrosse program: Co-Captain Jeff Ledwick, Co-Captain Dylan Hannum, Robbie Glascott, Nick Figliola, Doug Curtis and Matt McMahon.
We also thank the Weston youth players (the Trojan stars of tomorrow) and their parents who showed tremendous support for the team at the game.

Last Thursday June 5th, the Weston boys continued their march to the Class S Finals with a 10-3 win over the # 3 seed Somers (the 2006 Class S State Champion).
From the onset, Weston controlled the tempo of the game, dominated the time of possession and out-shot the Spartans 8-2 in the first quarter but were repeatedly denied by the Somers goalie. The teams were held scoreless until 6 minutes left in the half when Jeff Ledwick dodged to get free and hit a bounce shot on the run. Two minutes later. Junior attack Alex Scher found the back of the net to put the Trojans up 2-0. Somers then closed the gap to 2-1 at the half with a man-up goal. Again the first half was a defensive exhibition by the Trojans led by standout senior defenseman Robbie Glascott , junior Sam Crowell, freshman Kip McMahon along with sophomores Tucker Drimal and Willie Miller. Junior goalie Josh Briskman again directed the defense and the Weston faithful felt confident that the defense would keep the team in the game until they could crack the armor of the Somers defense.
The second half was all Weston as senior Dylan Hannum controlled the all important opening face-off second half and moved the ball to Robbie Cordisco who made a nifty move from X and put Weston up 3-1. Moments later, Sean Ledwick stole the goalies’ outlet pass with a one-handed grab & and quickly hit Scher who dumped it in for the second of his game & career high 4 goals. The Weston offense hit stride as senior Nick Figliola hit a wide open S. Ledwick who ripped a shot to put Weston up by 5-1. J. Ledwick then got a pretty pass from Scher and buried a top left shot as momentum was now clearly in Weston’s favor. The fourth quarter started with Cordisco’s second goal that was quickly answered by Somers. With the score 7-2, S. Ledwick again stole the ball from the goalie and quickly raced to the open net to put the Trojans up by 6 with less than 6 minutes in the game. Scher did not stop as he made a couple of shake and bake moves from behind the goal to get two more goals before the end, sealing a 10-3 margin.
The win propelled the Trojans to their second consecutive Class S Championship game against the 22-0 Rebels of New Fairfield on Saturday June 7th.

May the King Live -- Weston Positioned to Defend State Title |

The Weston HS boys lacrosse team defends its Class S State Title against New Fairfield at Brien-McMahon HS in Norwalk on Saturday, June 7 at 7:30 p.m. Weston defeated Somers HS from northern CT, 10-3, in the state semi-finals game last night, June 5.
Weston's road to the state title is taking on storybook proportions. It is a story of perseverance, emerging talent and a belief in the concept of TEAM. The Trojans lost 12 seniors from last year's first championship team, many of whom were all-state players. Several key players went down with season-ending injuries, including a top defenseman, middie and attackman. And the former head coach quit on the doorstep of the season. Abandoned players looked around the room and wondered how this could happen to them, and what they could do about it.
The rebuilding process commenced immediately. A new coach was announced and 3 weeks later, the season started. The players slowly adapted to a new system and teaching style. Players who expected to be crowned successors to the throne were told that they had to compete for a position. Players once relegated to the scrap heap in prior years were given a second chance. And the known stars, previously expected to shoulder the burden of the new season anyway, now faced a task that made Atlas's job look easy.
The team struggled in its opening few games as its captains on attack and at the faceoff willed the team to a few early season wins. But its flaws were quickly exploited by opponents as the team dropped to a record of 2-3 after the first five games. It was the first time Weston had a losing record since 2004. After 10 games, the team was 5-5 and stood at an inflexion point in the season. The new coach, thrust into the spotlight and trying to learn names while at the same time assessing ability, shifted players in and out of all the positions seeming to try to find the combination that would turn the tide in Weston's favor. The young defense, with only one returning starter who was coming off a broken wrist, a freshman long pole, and a converted midfielder, stood guard in front of a Junior goalie with no significant varsity experience. The attack was anchored by the team's leading offensive player in school history, but the other spots were occupied by a sophomore dealing with a back injury, and a junior who had never played at the varsity level. On the bench, a diminutive junior attackman wondered if he would ever get the chance to show his stuff under the pressure of game conditions where he knew he could change outcomes. And the midfield had two players who would certainly contribute while another 10 had to prove themselves anew. A cloud seemed to hang overhead as one of those top middies was felled with a broken wrist in the team's second game of the season. He would not return until the season ended and the playoffs began.
Although luck seemed to abandon the team, and faith was questioned, effort never relented. Win or lose, the team never gave up on itself and slowly it returned to its winning ways. The final 6 games of the season were highlighted with 5 straight wins and an overtime loss against a highly regarded Daniel Hand team. Along the way, the team jelled together and started to play excellent lacrosse punctuated by hustle and confidence. The followers became the leaders.
The team is now in the crescendo of its season. Fans are humming The Impossible Dream. Entering the Class S tournament ranked 7th, Weston crushed a rising 11th-ranked Old Saybrook team, 15-1. Then Weston showed its grit against an undefeated and second-ranked Old Lyme team, 13-12, in OT, when the diminutive attackman reminded those bigger and faster to never underestimate an opponent. And last night, the Trojans entered the walls of Danbury Stadium and unloaded its cargo of trained and honed men to defeat 4th-ranked Somers, 10-3.
Now, armored with confidence, talent and a sense of destiny, the Weston TEAM faces yet another undefeated opponent in the championship game to DEFEND Weston's state lacrosse title.
May the king live.

Weston Stuns Old Lyme in OT, 13-12, to Advance to State Semis |

by
posted 06/03/2008
The Weston boys varsity lacrosse team stunned previously undefeated Old Lyme HS, 13-12, in overtime on Tuesday, June 3. Weston plays Somers HS at Danbury HS (neutral site) at 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 5 in the State Semi-Final round. Weston advances to the state semi-finals for the 3rd consecutive year.
Weston played an outstanding game from start to finish. Every player contributed to the win. Weston's Dylan Hannum and Jeff Ledwick dominated on faceoffs to help Weston control the game's momentum. Goals were scored by Rob Cordisco (4), Sean and Jeff Ledwick (3 each), Peter Smith (1), Nick Figliola (1) and Alex Scher (1).
Cordisco opened the scoring with 2 goals and then assisted on Sean Ledwick's first goal as Weston took an early 3-2 lead. Jeff Ledwick scored Weston's 4th goal and Cordisco added his third of the quarter to extend the lead to 5-3 at the end of one quarter. Sean Ledwick stole the OL goalie's clearing pass and dumped it into an open net, then Jeff Ledwick added his second of the day to increase the lead to 7-3 midway through the second quarter. Brother Sean sunk his third of the game shortly thereafter. OL climbed back into the contest with 2 extra-man goals and a fast break conversion to end the half with Weston leading, 8-6.
OL evened the score at 9-9 after three quarters. Weston's lone goal in the quarter came when Peter Smith took full advantage of his chance and dodged from out top then finished with a bounce shot to the goalie's right. OL took its first lead since scoring the opening goal of the game and went ahead 10-9 early in the fourth quarter. But Jeff Ledwick came around the left side of the goal after a perfect pass from Brian Rogers and sniped the upper corner to tie the game, 10-10. Nick Figliola scored his biggest (and prettiest) goal of his career when he drove righty from behind the goal, then curled and popped back to his left and fired a perfect lefty shot to regain the lead, 11-10. But OL was superb and they turned the heat up with another goal, only to be matched by Rob Cordisco's blast from the top right to give Weston the lead with 1:32 remaining. Weston turned the ball over in its own end and OL tied the game to force a sudden victory overtime period.
Weston won the OT faceoff on a great scoop by Tucker Drimal. Drimal and fellow sophomore standout, Will Miller, controlled the groundballs on the faceoffs all afternoon and played stellar defense on a very good OL offense. In the biggest faceoff of their high school experience, Ledwick pushed the ball out to Drimal who scooped it and advanced it over the midfield. Coach Brendan Carney called a timeout and set up an offensive play that finished with Rob Cordisco shooting just wide of the pipe. Brother Jeff took the ball inbounds on the left side and passed it to Brother Sean up top. Sean took three runs at the cage, dumping a brilliant pass to the elusive Alex Scher to the goalie's left. Alex caught it lefty, curled to the cage and placed a perfect bounce shot into the cage for the overtime win. The Weston benched emptied and mauled Scher after his winning goal.
The Weston defense played tough against one of the best attack unit's in the state. Josh Briskman was commanding in the cage with excellent saves and effective clearing passes. Rob Glascott played in his All-State form, Sam Crowell made several breakups and cleared the ball well, and Kip McMahon played well beyond his years under pressure from a crafty OL attack.

Dear 2008 Weston Lacrosse Parent:
INTRODUCTION
The agony and the ecstasy. The sorrow and the joy. Friendships forged. Memories made. Think of how life would be without sports.
One family can make a difference! Thanks to the generosity and vision of one Weston family (and 75 other families that contributed to the cause), Weston lacrosse now has an endowment to guarantee permanent funding for boys and girls lacrosse at all levels of play. We all deserve to be proud of Weston lacrosse. Since 1998, we have built great youth and high school programs based on the values of competitive excellence, safety, respect and fun.
Yet building a tradition of excellence takes permanent funding resources to attract, develop and retain outstanding coaching and to purchase the best equipment available for our player’s safety, training and performance. Excellence can be derailed by economic, enrollment and budgetary cycles. We are mindful that Weston once had a thriving high school lacrosse program in the early 1980s, only to see it cut when enrollment and budget declines hit the town in the late 1980s. It took 15 years to bring the sport back to Weston.
The Endowment ensures strong funding for Weston lacrosse forever! And it sends a message that "Weston is committed to the tradition of excellence" at levels reached by some of the great lacrosse towns around the country. Weston is on the verge of becoming a “destination town” for lacrosse enthusiasts who want to become a part of our emerging tradition.
Parents and friends can "give back" to the future of Weston lacrosse by making a tax deductible gift to the Weston Lacrosse Club - Paul Scheufele Endowment Fund. Who knows, in 30 years, when we watch our grandchildren play lacrosse with their friends in Weston, we may know that we were vital to its success at the beginning when it mattered most. We were pioneers that made a difference forever!
Do something for yourself and it dies with you. Do something for others and it lives forever.
NEWSLETTER
We have created a newsletter to provide information about Weston lacrosse at the youth and high school level for boys and girls and to recognize those people who supported the Endowment in period ending June 30, 2007. Please see the attached PDF file. files.LeagueAthletics.com/Images/Club/1/2008 WLC Newsletter (2) (2).pdf
ENDOWMENT INCOME WILL FUND "THE BALL WALL"
The WLC Endowment Fund principal is well over $100,000 after its first year. The first distribution from the fund of $3,000 will help pay for the Weston Lacrosse Ball Wall under construction at Weston High School. The Club recognizes Brian McMahon, past WLC President, Mark Berkowitz, WHS Athletic Director, and Warren Cartmel, a local contractor, for their relentless effort to build the Ball Wall. Warren Cartmel is volunteering to build the wall for our community to honor his brother, the late Frank Cartmel, who played lacrosse along with Warren at WHS in the 1980s. The Ball Wall is an essential skill development tool for lacrosse players.
PARTICIPATION IN THE ENDOWMENT FUND DRIVE IS OUR #1 GOAL
Our goal is to have at least 100 Weston families participate in our Endowment fundraising drive. Participation is our #1 goal. We are asking you to please participate at an amount that is comfortable to you. Every little bit helps us to deliver excellence to the kids who play Weston lacrosse.

The Weston boys lacrosse team defeated Masuk, 12-6, yesterday in its first Southwest Conference tournament win ever to advance to the semi-finals today at Weston High School at 5 p.m. Weston is hosting the conference tournament today and the other game between New Fairfield and New Milford will follow at 7 p.m.
Today's tournament features 4 teams that are ranked in the top 20 for all teams in the state of CT. New Fairfield is 17-0 and ranked 3rd in the state, followed by Newtown which is 14-3 and ranked 10th. New Milford and Weston are ranked 19th and 20th in the state with identical 11-6 records.
Weston has won 6 of its last 7 games capped by a convincing win over Masuk yesterday. Masuk was ranked 3rd in the SWC tournament with a league record of 9-3 while Weston was ranked 6th in the tournament wth a league record of 8-4.
Weston's win over Masuk yesterday was sparked by Alex Scher who came off the bench early in the game to spark the offense with 2 goals and some excellent play-making. He combined with the Ledwick brothers, Jeff (5g) and Sean (3g), for 10 of the team's 12 goals. In addition, Rob Cordisco returned from a broken wrist that sidelined him on April 5 to score in his first game back. Dylan Hannum, who had a solid 2 nd half at faceoff against one of the league’s premier X- men finished the scoring with a solo goal early in the 4 thquarter. Adam Block and Jon Figliola also contributed assists to the Trojan offensive blitz.
Josh Briskman teamed up with solid defensive work to hold Masuk to 6 goals which was 5 goals lower than the Masul average of 11 goals per game. As has been their practice lately, the Weston D shut down a tough opponent when it mattered most. Goalie Josh Briskman, defensemen Robbie Glascott, Sam Crowell, and Kip McMahon, LSMs Doug Curtis and Tucker Drimal and SSDM Will Miller combined to hold Masuk to just 2 goals in the second half – the last in garbage time when the game was already out of reach.
In facing Newtown today, Weston looks to avenge a 12-8 loss suffered on May 1 at Newtown.

In the OT period, the Weston defense , which was stellar all nigh long, led by Glascott, Sam Crowell, Kip McMahon , Willie Miller and Tucker Drimal held Hand in check until the Tigers scored with 20 seconds left in the second OT off a fast break. Goalie Josh Briskman was spectacular in the fourth quarter and made some big time saves in OT to keep Weston alive.

Weston extended its current winning streak to four games and its record to nine and five with a 12 to 5 victory over Pomperaug in Southbury Thursday night. After a brief shaky start the Trojan defense led by goalie Josh Briskman and poles Robbie Glascott, Sam Crowell, Kip McMahon, and Doug Curtis locked down and held Pomperaug to just 2 goals in the last 3 quarters to seal the win. The tough Trojan D held Pomperaug to almost 4 goals less than their season average.
As always the Weston offense was keyed by the their all-state co-captain Jeff Ledwick who scored four goals. Senior Nick Figliola who has been on fire during this winning streak added 2 more. Peter Smith opened the scoring and Morgan Faller, Sean Ledwick, Adam Block, Brian Rogers, and Devin Weintraub each added a goal in a very balanced attack. Block contributed three outstanding assists as well, always unselfishly finding the open man.
Weston again dominated possession as co-captain Dylan Hannum won 80% of his draws at X ably assisted by the aggressive efforts of Tucker Drimal and Will Miller on the wings at face-off who seemed to get every ground ball.
The Trojans next play on Tuesday, May 13th against Immaculate. It is the last regular season home game for six Weston seniors: Doug Curtis, Nick Figliola, Robbie Glascott, Dylan Hannum, Jeff Ledwick, and Matt McMahon who have been playing lacrosse and admirably representing Weston since they were in 3rd and 4th grade.
