WHS Boys Win Class S State Title
The Weston High School boys lacrosse team defeated Joel Barlow (Redding), 10-8, to win the 2007 State of Connecticut Class S tournament played at Brien-McMahon HS in Norwalk on Saturday, June 9.
Weston opened the game by scoring the first 5 goals. But an outstanding Barlow team battled back to within 1 goal by the end of the first half with Weston leading 6-5. Barlow scored the first goal of the 3rd quarter to tie the game and then drew a Weston penalty to go man-up. Weston's Robbie Cordisco (Fr) netted a short-handed goal to help Weston regain the lead, 7-6. Weston scored an additional 3 consecutive goals to go ahead, 10-6, at the end of 3 quarters. Barlow jumped out early in the 4th quarter to close the gap to 10-8 with 8 minutes remaining. Weston goalie Ollie Baron and his defensive unit shut the door on Barlow for the remainder of the game.
Weston's goals were scored by Gordie Zimmermann (3 goals, 2 assists), Jeff Ledwick (2 goals, 5 assists), Ben Fine (2 goals, 1 assist), Robbie Cordisco (2 goals, 1 assist) and Darren Scheufele (1 goal, 2 assists).
But this game was as much about team defense as it was about scoring. Barlow controlled most of the faceoffs throughout the day and put constant pressure on the Weston defensive unit. Tom Montelli, Robbie Glascott and Matt Druks all played outstanding games. Defensive middies Mikey Scheufele (long stick), Remy Bolea (short stick) and Dylan Hannum (short stick) were relentless against a powerful Barlow offense. Mark Allen was stellar as a man-down defenseman.
The defensive effort would have been wasted had it not been for the spectacular play of Ollie Baron. The senior goalie played the game of his career when it mattered most and turned away many point-blank shots by Barlow.
Weston finished the season with an 18-3 record and a final 4th place standing in the Laxpower.com ranking which measures all Class L, M and S schools in the state. It was the final game for 12 Weston seniors from the very first class in Weston lacrosse when the youth program was founded in 1999. They are Mark Allen, Oliver Baron, Remy Bolea, Matt Druks, Max During, Ben Fine, Chris Laico, Dan Miller, Tom Montelli, Greg Simon, Darren Scheufele and Gordie Zimmermann.
Duke-Bound Tom Montelli Earns All America Honors
Senior defenseman Tom Montelli was named to the High School All America team for 2007. Montelli will attend Duke University and play lacrosse next fall. The high school All America team is comprised of the very best high school players in the nation.
Montelli, 6-4, 225 lbs, is a force on both defensive and offense. He is a dominating player who covers the top offensive players on each team. His great physical presence is only exceeded by his great footwork and stick work. He wields his long pole with pinache and has great takeaway checks. He uses his lateral speed developed as an all star member of the Weston High School State Championship basketball team to head off attackers. And he has superb straight away speed to lead fast breaks out of the defensive zone. Montelli also plays on the team's extra-man offense. He recorded close to 20 goals this season which is remarkable for a defensive player.
Off the field, Montelli is an outstanding student and participates in several charitable causes. He is a mentor in the Big Brother/Big Sister Program and does field work with his church. He is also a trumpeter in the WHS Band and received the Sal LaRusso Award for the 2006-2007 school year.
Montelli started playing lacrosse in 6th grade.
Chasing Dreams and Supporting Teams
Now that the Weston High School boys lacrosse team will play in the Connecticut state title game in Norwalk tomorrow, it seems like a good time to reflect upon the team's success. Regardless of the outcome of the state title game, we should be really proud of Weston Lacrosse. In particular, we should be proud of the players.
The senior class on this team is a special group of kids. They have grown up together playing a variety of sports from youth soccer, to little league to youth football and basketball. They have shared the classroom since kindergarten which is one of the unique benefits of living in a small town. They had playdates together when they were still eating with their first set of teeth and they have slept on each other's bedroom floors for years. More than teammates, they are friends. The fires of competitive high school lacrosse has strengthened the friendship bond. The underclassmen on the team are equally tight-knit and the four classes mesh together to form a cohesive team where players care for each other.
Several members of the team were original members of the first Weston lacrosse bantam team in 1999. They are Greg Simon, Ollie Baron, Darren and Mikey Scheufele, Jeff Ledwick and Josh Briskman. Along the way several current seniors joined in. Remy Bolea, Dan Miller, Ben Fine, Matt Druks and Max During joined the program in 5th grade. Tom Montelli and Mark Allen started up in 6th grade. Chris Laico and Gordie Zimmermann dropped their baseball bat for a lacrosse stick in 7th grade. Overall, nearly 60 classmates of this senior class played lacrosse at one point, attracted to the teaching model of ample play. Although only 12 remain playing in Weston, several others have moved out of town and play at their current high school. Still others play other sports like tennis and golf in Weston, or have decided to concentrate on other sports on a more year-around basis. These former teammates in youth lacrosse have become some of the team's best fans. Most have fond memories of their experiences in youth lacrosse.
The Weston team's accomplishments are remarkable in the context of the the size of our high school and the newness of the program. We have only been playing high school lacrosse in Weston for 5 years and we have the smallest boys enrollment of any of the top 18 teams in the state when combining Class L, M and S teams. When the youth program started, we thought that we could overcome the school enrollment deficiency by creating a youth program model that would attract a disproportionate amount of kids to the game. And, as anyone who has seen lacrosse knows, the excitement and action of the game is very attractive to today's youth culture.
We thought our biggest challenge would be that most dads in town did not play lacrosse when they were kids and hence had no desire to teach lacrosse to their kids. This was different than in local towns such as Darien, Wilton, New Canaan and Greenwich where many parents considered the quality of the town's lacrosse program as a factor in the decision to move to that town. While most Weston parents were not inclined to play lacrosse catch with the kids in the backyard on a Sunday afternoon, Wilton parents were fanatical about it.
The loss of "passing it forward" to the next generation was partly overcome by teaching sound fundamentals at an early age. We tried to instill the values of hard work and developing skills both lefty and righty. If you watch kids like Darren Scheufele, Jeff Ledwick, Tom Montelli, Morgan Faller and Robbie Cordisco, you would not see any drop in skill level when they go lefty or righty. They may favor one hand over the other, but they are equally proficient. You can bet that a lot of backyard skill development has happened with this group of kids. We also overcame it through good coaching at the high school level. Coach Whitten has spent a lot of his time over the past 3 years teaching fundamentals at the high school and youth levels with the youth involvement occuring during his free time. Just about every player on the high school team has seen dramatic skill improvement since leaving the youth program. However, it is still pretty easy to pick out the kids who play a lot of wall ball and catch in the backyard during the off season. There is absolutely no substitute for this backyard work.
We have recently tried to bridge the generation gap by establishing the LaxPals program. LaxPals is an informal relationship between the youth and high school players whereby the high school players attend one or two youth practices and in return, the youth players attend the high school games. This has been a great success this season as we have seen a big increase in fan support for the high school team by youth players. We also instituted Family Night which is a concept we borrowed from the WHS Basketball program. With Family Night, we invited all Weston families to a night lacrosse game with free admission. We gave away team photos and held an autograph session at the end of the game. All kids (high school and youth) loved it! We now see youth players at most home games and a few seek autographs from their favorite players. We hope that this will create a bond between the generations that leads the younger kids to want to emulate the older ones. And this group of high school players is worth emulating. They are great kids who are good role models on and off the field.
As the Weston program specifically and the game of lacrosse generally advances, better players are spending much more time perfecting stick skills. Today's youth players will be challenged at a much high skill level than even today's high school team. Kids will not be able to get by on athleticism alone. This is not a call to concentrate specifically on lacrosse. Coaches at all levels of the game (College D1, D2 and D3, high school and youth) strongly urge kids to play multiple sports. Competing on a playing field in any sport during the summer, fall and winter will make you a better lacrosse player. Of the 26 Weston varsity lacrosse players, all but 3 play another sport. All of them played at least two sports during the youth phase of their lives. Rather, it is a call to encourage young players to play catch and wall ball consistently and methodically throughout the course of the year. By methodically, we mean "to play catch with a purpose." Practice to perfect proper throwing, catching, scooping, cradling and shooting technique both lefty and righty. Don't just play catch and ingrain bad form. Work to improve your form. Don't just stand still in front of the goal and take 20 righty shots for the middle of the goal from 15 yards out. Shoot 50 times lefty and righty. Shoot on the run. Shoot for all spots along the uprights and crossbar. Be methodical. Shoot 10 lower left, 10 hip-high left, 10 upper left, 10 under the crossbar, 10 upper right, etc. until you go all the way around the cage. Then do it again...and again...and again.
We hope that parent and youth players make it to the championship game in Norwalk on June 9. By doing so, you will help to honor the game of lacrosse and those who play it with passion and the pursuit of excellence. And you will be doing a great service to your young aspiring lacrosse child. You would be surprised by the impact watching your high school team in a state title game can have on kids. It makes them dream. And chasing dreams is one of life's great pleasures.

Class S Tournament Explained
The Weston High School boys lacrosse team hosts the opening round of the State Class S tournament on Saturday, June 2 at 3PM. Please come to support the team.
For a look at the complete tournament bracket, please click here: www.casciac.org/scripts/display_bracket16.cgi
This time of year, we often hear fans ask, "How are schools placed into Class L, M and S tournaments and how are seedings determined?" Placement in each class is divided by the number of schools in the state that play boys lacrosse. Since there are 72 school, each division has 24 teams. The state then looks at the enrollment for boys in grades 10-12 from the prior academic year. The 24 teams with the highest enrollment are assigned to Class L, the next 24 to Class M and the lowest 24 to Class S. This season, Class L is comprised of schools with boys enrollment over 584, while Class M has enrollment of 359-584 boys and Class S has enrollment up to 358 boys.
Weston is one of the smallest schools in Class S with an enrollment of 270 boys in grades 10-12 for the academic year 2005-2006. For comparative sake in the Southwest Conference, New Milford is in Class L with 596 boys, while Barlow has 346 boys and New Fairfield has 340 boys.
Weston's regular season finish of 14-2 and its Laxpower.com ranking of 7 in the state (all Classes combined) is remarkable considering its small enrollment . Weston is the smallest school in the top 18. The other schools' enrollments are:

To qualify for state tournament play, teams must have a .400 record and play at least 10 games versus CIAC schools. Teams are seeded by won-loss percentage. Ties are broken based on, in order: 1. Head to head competition; 2. Record vs. common opponents; 3. Greater # of wins; 4. Coin toss.
Weston is seeded 1st in the Class S tournament. Although it has the same winning percentage as Somers, Weston defeated and Somers lost to the one common opponent, Norhtwest Catholic HS.
If Weston wins the first round game on June 2, then it will host the winner of the Avon-Morgan game on June 5 at 5PM at Weston High School. Avon is seeded 8th while Morgan is seeded 9th in the tournament. Weston reached the semi-final game last year, losing to Fairfield-Ludlowe HS, 10-9, in overtime. Somers was the eventual Class S champion in 2006.
Weston's success is all the more remarkable considering it is in just its 5th season as a Varsity sport. Weston was 2-14 in 2003 and 6-10 in 2004. It has reached the state tournament all 3 years under Head Coach Alex Whitten. The combination of a youth program that teaches a love of the game and strong fundamental skills, combined with outstanding coaching at the HS level, are major factors in the team's success.
On an individual level, Weston has produced more and more all-conference and all-state players each year. In 2005, Weston had 4 all-conference and 0 all-state players. In 2006, Weston had 8 all-conference and 4 all-state players. This season, Weston has 10 all-conference players and the all-state teams has not been chosen. The list of players earning all-state and all-conference spots is below.

Weston's success thus far is admirable. However, success in sports is measured with each passing moment and today's success does not guarantee future success. The good news is that Weston can build upon its momentum each year. The challenge is that Weston will no longer sneak up on opponents as the town is expected to produce strong teams each year. To meet the challenge, young players need to continuously develop their lacrosse skills to reach the higher levels that the game demands. Skill levels in high school advance each year such that players in the next few years will need to be highly skilled both lefty and righty to capture playing time and field success. When you watch the best skilled players on 2007 teams, bear in mind that this skill level will be the minimum acceptable standard for success in a few years. So never stop working to improve your skills.
