posted 03/07/2010 Lacrosse the Nations, an international humanitarian 501 c(3) organization that supports education in impoverished communities throughout the world has formed a partnership with the Weston Lacrosse Club.
Lacrosse the Nations was founded under the principal that education is the best pathway out of poverty and toward a better life. By partnering with lacrosse programs in the U.S. and with schools in impoverished communities around the globe, LTN establishes lacrosse to help improve educational enrollment, attendance and graduation rates while encouraging health, safety, respect and FUN.
In its first year of operation, LTN has partnered with the school located in the city dump community in Managua, Nicaragua. The dump community, known as La Chureca, is home to 1,000 people, half of them children, who endure extreme poverty living in and subsisting off other people's garbage. Nearly 350 students attend the school in grades K-6. While poor perhaps beyond our understanding, the children express hope and happiness in their everyday lives that is inspiring for those from outside the community. The co-founders of LTN have worked as humanitarians in the dump community for 5 years and are trusted advocates there.
Weston Lacrosse Club's founder, Paul Scheufele, visited La Chureca with captains from the 2007 Weston High School boys and girls lacrosse teams. He will talk briefly about Lacrosse the Nations partnership at our kickoff meeting at WHS on Tuesday, March 9.
T-Shirts supporting Lacrosse the Nations will be sold for $20 at the kickoff meeting.
For more information on the organization, please see www.lacrossethenations.org.

| | Oliver Parker and James Brasco Hoist 2009 Malin Award | | | The Weston Lacrosse Club announces the 2009 Boys Clem Malin Award winners, Oliver Parker and James Brasco. Oliver, left, and James, right, were 8th grade members of the club's senior teams last season. Joining the winners in the photo of the eponymous award are Clem Malin, far right, and Jim Smith, back left. Jim Smith was the coach of the Senior Blue team last season and has coached and mentored this group of players for many years.
Given annually by the Weston Lacrosse Club, the Clem Malin Award recognizes one or more eighth grade players in the boys and girls programs who have demonstrated athletic skills, leadership and sportsmanship in the game of lacrosse, as well as academic achievement and community service during their years leading up to high school.
The award honors Clem Malin, a founding member and coach of the Weston Lacrosse Club. Clem is a graduate of Dartmouth College, Class of 1956, where he was a two-time All American lacrosse goalie and standout soccer player. Clem captained both varsity squads at Dartmouth. During his graduate studies at Princeton University he was also an assistant coach of the lacrosse team.
Following a thirty-eight career in the international oil industry and the United States Government, Clem retired in Weston where he remains active in a number of community organizations and activities in addition to coaching lacrosse. His wife Ann attends all of Clem’s games and refers to all of the players that he has coached as “our boys.”
